This article speaks on the debated topic of using technology in the classroom. California just passed a bill to increase technology spending to further enhance their standards based computer science curriculum, which is 1 of only 7 states with such standards. It discusses not if, but how technology is appropriate and in the best interest of students and teachers. I was recently in a technology meeting at my school and we discussed not getting behind the times- my principal discussed how fear is what is guiding many people in technology but that all great things started with fear. She said Socrates was fearful of writing his thoughts down, she also said that when the Brooklyn Bridge was built, P.T. Barnum was paid to put his elephants on the bridge to make sure it was sound and secure before anyone would cross it... these stories make up our history and show that fear started with all great things. We are in the fear stage of technology because it's new and rapidly growing, but just like with the stories above, we must move forward in confidence that it's just something new and remain mindful. This article particularly talks about the positive effects it has on not only students but teachers. It supports students with disabilities, allows teachers share and collaborate on curriculums and lessons, and gives students creative abilities to produce newspapers, projects and solutions that they may not be able to do otherwise. There is a happy medium between technology and actual teaching. One does not replace the other and both are necessary and better when working together.

Storybird.com is a tool that I plan to use in my 5th grade ELA classroom. It allows users to create stories using images, video and clips by collaborating with other students or teachers in the classroom. I plan to use this tool by assigning groups a specific genre to write about and have the students to collaborate and present their story to the class. A challenge that I foresee is making sure that all students are respectful and all take part in the process. I will assign each person a job for the story and also have students grade one another on their participation in the group.
