This article opens my mind to a different perspective on the use of technology in the classroom, particularly google classroom. It brings your focus to not what technology can take away, but rather what it allows more of. It shifts my view, allowing me to see the positive effects I can have on my students use of appropriate technology.
The article states several positive aspects of allowing students to use google classroom. One being that is allows the teach more one on one time or group meetings with students that provide richer and deeper relationships between teacher and student. It also says how it provides teachers with the ability to ask for critical and higher order thinking questions rather than just spewing out facts the traditional way. It gives teachers more time to enhance their lessons and ask deeper level questions to engage more students. Of course, it also gives expected positives such as using less paper, posting the classroom agenda so students always know what to expect and complete, and students being able to ask questions more easily and frequently. The main thing I got out of this article was the particular mind shift of viewing google classroom as a better way to communicate effectively with my students.
One particular educational tool that I would like to use in my classroom is https://www.flocabulary.com/. I would like to use flocabulary.com to introduce new vocabulary terms to the students in my ELA class. I will play the video in my class when a particular term is introduced and then discuss with my class the new term by asking questions and asking students to turn and talk to their partners about the new term. I will then pair up my students to work with a partner to complete the vocab game together using their Chromebooks. I believe this cooperative partner work and discussion time will be a good introduction of particular ELA terms and have high class engagement.
One challenge I may encounter while introducing flocabulary.com is ensuring that all of my students are engaged in the introduction and discussion of the new vocabulary term. Although, flocabulary.com appears highly engaging, some students may not learn best this way so I need to make sure during my discussion after that I engage those students that may not have gotten anything out of the video.
